Catalog note / 解説
In this dramatic scene, Söjürö's sword is raised, about to sever the head of Ryüzö. Judging from the pattern on Ryüzö's kimono, this is probably a scene from Chüshingura (Treasury of the Forty-seven Loyal Retainers) the famous tale of 47 samurai who sought revenge for their lord's death. Söjürö was known for his skillful portrayal of Oboshi Yuranosuke in the Chüshingura Kabuki performance. (from “Kabuki Actors on Stage” exhibition, 4/14/2003-)
