Hunters and foresters are warming their hands at a log-fire outside a mountain-hut. The flames throw the foreground figures and the snow-bound hut into bright relief against a dark sky. With a poem in the square cartouche: 'Friends are gone from me, the grass and leaves are withered, Ah! How remembrance makes winter-time more lonely here in this mountain hamlet'.
