Catalog note / 解説
Nagging Old Woman, from the series One Hundred Fashionable Riddles, by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) While her grandchild pounds the kinks out of her shoulders, grandma sits and scolds. The daughter-in-law sighs and bows in front of her, with an expression that seems to say Not another scolding from Grandma! Grandma's tiresomely endless scolds seem to invite a snooze, just like the sonorous sound of the wooden temple bell lying in the front of the print. The poem is a complex layering of puns that on one level implies One of grandma's scolds, the thirtieth day of September, autumn/tiredness fills the heart. This is one print from a series of riddle prints created by Hokusai
