Catalog note / 解説
Bon Festival Dance from the series Five Seasonal Festivals, by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1864) The scene of the Bon Festival Dance. This is a triptych with two dancers shown on each of the three prints. The rhythm of the dance seems to move from hand to dancer's hand, and the woman on the far left seems to receive and stop that movement. This is an especially effective use of the connected print series format. The bold patterning of the kimono, the tassels of the paper lanterns overhead, all seem to set the foot tapping and the mood swaying. This scene would have taken place in the seventh month under the lunar calendar, what is now August.
