Prince Genji Woodblock Print by Kunisada II An 1857 woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada II, the top pupil and son-in-law of the first Kunisada. This print comes from a series on the Genji Monogatari, the 11th century classic concerning an Imperial prince, his life and loves. This print shows Prince Genji with one of his lovers beside a stream. A torch burns at the banks, as the woman tugs on Genji's sleeve. This series has yellow, speckled borders, meant to suggest the gold-flecked papers of the Heian Period. The title is in paired shells with a Genji crest, a reference to a popular game in the Edo Period. The print measures 14 by 9 1/2 inches, borders on all sides. The colors and condition…
