Japanese Woodblock by Utamaro ‘Beauty Reading Scroll’ (c1927) A rare and very early Showa era woodblock “re-strike” (that is, produced from re-carved blocks) by Japan’s early grandmaster of “ukiyo-e,” Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) and published by Fusui Gabo Publishers (lower right margin, see second scan) of Tokyo (active 1920’s/30’s). Scene is of a beauty seen reading a rolled scroll; originally published in the late-1790’s/early 1800’s. (Prints by this publisher?Fusui Gabo?are rarely seen; a great “find” by consignee who stumbled upon a dealer and purchased his remaining 2 prints.)
