Catalog note / 解説

the ghost of the vengeful Raigo returns in the form of a rat (still wearing a priestly robe) and multiplies to a thousand rats to wreck havoc on the Miidera temple and destroy the precious books and scroll of Emperor Shirakawa (reigned 1072-86); signed on the wood pillar Yoshitoshi with artist's oval seal (unread), the series title Shinkei Sanjurokkaisen along the top margin, the print title in the three color cartouche at the upper right, dated at lower left margin, Meiji nijuyonnen (Meiji 24 [1891]), followed by publisher's details of Sasaki Toyokichi (Tokyo, Kyobashi-ku, Owari-cho 2-1), and by carver's seal Chokuzan
