Catalog note / 解説
Chikanobu was a student of Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) and well known for his bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). A samurai working directly for the Shogunate, Chikanobu likely witnessed activities at the women's court (Ö-oku), where the Shögun's wives and consorts lived. This extravagant Genji image might have been based on Chikanobu's experience at the Shögun's residence. (from Tale of Genji exhibition 1/11/06-)
