Catalog note / 解説
Ichikawa Danjuro VI in Sukeroku, by Katsukawa Shunsho (1726-1792) Even if the actor's name did not appear on a print, it is likely that the people who bought actor prints during the Edo period could tell which actor in what play was depicted by their costumes and the crests depicted on the costumes. Actor prints were not simply explanations of the plays. They were intended to raise peopleOs interest in the actors themselves. The artist here, Katsukawa Shunsho, was famous for introducing the concept of portraiture into the genre of actor prints
