Catalog note / 解説
The actor Ötani Hiroji III appears in the Nakamura-za performance of “Gohiki Kanjinchö” presented in the second month of An-nei era 2 (1773). The scene comes from the Jöruri (Puppet Theater) performance “Rottazuna Koi no Sekifuda.” He strikes a sustained pose (mie ) next to a stream. A twisted willow trunk is behind the actor; the juxtaposition makes for a satisfying composition. (from “Capturing Actor’s Spirit / Shunshö” exhibition 1/15/2009-)
