Catalog note / 解説
Enoshima, from the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji", by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) This is a view from eight scenes selected for the region that stretches from Edo to the Izu Peninsula. This island with its narrow sand causeway is immediately recognizable as Enoshima Island near Kamakura. Enoshima is known for providing a perfect view of Mt. Fuji in just the right proportions, and there were many images made of Mt. Fuji seen from Enoshima island. Here the regular triangular shape of Mt. Fuji is echoed in shapes of the breaking waves in the foreground.
