Saturday, 5 November 2005 This print is entitled Hinomisaki, Izumo and is from the series "Souvenirs of travel, third series". Izumo is the old name for present day Shimane prefecture. This is on the San-in (Shadow) side of Japan facing the Sea of Japan to the west. It is a night scene along the coast with a view out to the turbulent sea through a cluster of weathered pines. The print is very interesting in that it was printed entirely of shades of blue. (There is another lighter version that suggests early dawn.) It reminds one of the aizurie prints of the early ukiyo-e masters, Hokusai in particular. Hasui did just a handful of prints in this technique. It is a rare and wonderful piece. T…
