Kawase Hasui: "Chii Mountain Temple" (1940) Original First Edition woodblock print on superb washi. Paper size: 39.2cm (H) x 26.7cm (W) Image size: 36.2cm (H) x 24.2cm (W) Titled and dated Showa 15 (1940) in Japanese in left margin. Watanabe publisher's "E" seal (1932-1942) in right margin. Hasui signature in black ink with red sui seal in lower right of image. Excellent registration and impression with very strong bleedthrough of pigment to the verso. It is quite amazing that an image dominated by brown colouration could be so full of depth and atmosphere. A most captivating image. The print has been extremely well kept down the years.
