Catalog note / 解説

Samurai warriors, Suzaki Saburo (left: played by Ichikawa Ensho) and Kato Jiro (Ichikawa Sadanji) burst into the palace of Hojo Tokimasa and threat his daughter, Masako in the play, "Genji Hata-age" in Meiji-za theater. Historical fact was that Hojo Masako (1157-1225) became the wife of Minamoto Yoritomo, the first ruler of the Kamakura Shogunate. She skillfully handled the fights and treacheries among the feudal lords and the imperial court. After the death of Yoritomo, she exerted considerable political power over the Kamakura Shogunate. The following members of the Hojo clan dominated the actual political power as the regent for the Kamakura shoguns in the 13-14th century.
