Catalog note / 解説

The Japanese were curious about the lands from which the foreigners in Yokohama came. The artist Yoshitora had never visited London and therefore relied on secondary sources to build up this composite image. The domed building in the distance is meant to be St Paul’s Cathedral. A cartouche at the top of the central print contains an introduction to London by the author Kanagaki Robun ( 1829-1894), in which he mentions the ‘ extremely deep passions’ of the girls and the ‘exceptionally clever’ character of the boys. Materials: Colour print from wood blocks
