Catalog note / 解説
"Nihon Banzai; Hyakusen Hyakusho" (Hurrah Japan; One Hundred Collected Laughs). The title was punned for the meaning of "One Hundred Battles, One Hundred Victories". Kiyochika studied the Western style newspaper caricatures. He made two Hyakusen Hyakusho series, one for Sino-Japanese War (1894-95) and another for Russo-Japanese War (1904-05). This one depicts the turmoil of the Dragon Palace because of the debris from sinking battle ships.
