Kobayashi KIYOCHIKA (1847 - 1915) Ikaiei shingun haichi no zu (Picture of advance disposition of troups at Weihaiwei) "After seizing port Arthur, the Japanese forces destroyed the remaining Chinese fleet in a battle at Weihaiwei (February 12, 1895). Here we see the Japanese army looking down on the soon-to-be-destroyed ships in the harbor. The destruction of the Chinese ships by the Japanese navy enabled the army to occupy the city, which they held until forced to give it up by the Tripartite Intervention." - Swinton, p.50 Kiyochika is the best known of the Meiji war print artists, and this is one of his finest prints.
