"Kitano Shrine" (bull and supplicant), Japanese Woodblock Print, Tokuriki (1902-2000). This print is from Tokuriki's "Views of Kyoto" series. Famous for his mastery of the blending of similar colors, Tokuriki here places a fragile, solitary figure in front of a massive statue. Note Tokuriki's use of purple for the supplicant's coat and bright stripes in the bull's harness, two focusing points of color in a brooding, late winter landscape. Flowers have just budded on the otherwise stark rows of plum trees that frame the supplicant's path.
