Catalog note / 解説
The Katsukawa sumö repertoire began with full-length realistic portraits of individual wrestlers wearing elegant brocade keshömawashi, as seen in this print. The darker areas in the print were originally painted with white lead, which has tarnished over time. This method was used to create different tones defining muscle shape and body movement.
