Catalog note / 解説
This print depicts a Dutch ship leaving Nagasaki. The Mt. Inasayama of the title is to the right of the picture. For the majority of the Edo period (1615-1868), Japan pursued a policy of <i>sakoku</i> ('closed country'). Japanese were not allowed to travel abroad, and visitors to Japan were limited. Only the Dutch and the Chinese were allowed to trade with Japan, from their bases in Nagasaki. In the context of limited international contact, then, this print by Hokkei would surely have had an air of the exotic about it. Materials: Colour print from wood blocks
