Catalog note / 解説
Two Women Enjoying the Cool Evening Breeze, by Chobunsai Eishi (1756-1829) Two women are out on a verandah enjoying the cool evening breeze. The seated woman is holding a fan and smoking the traditional Japanese style of pipe. The standing woman is hanging up a goldfish bowl and her kimono is so sheer, so cooling that we can see the outlines of her body through it. This kind of cool-toned print which avoids bright or gaudy colors depicts an almost monochrome world. This style of print was known as beni-girai, literally shunning red, and was enjoyed for its refreshing, restful coolness.
