Catalog note / 解説
Colour woodblock print, oban triptych from an album of 117 sheets. The kabuki actors Seki Sanjuro II (right sheet) as Onio Shinzaemon wearing the two swords of a samurai and holding a suit of armour under one arm, Onoe Kikugoro III as Kudo Saemon (Suketsune; centre), standing with a sheathed dagger in hand, wearing the ‘eboshi’ cap and large-sleeved, crested ‘daimon’ costume of a feudal lord with long ‘nagabakama’ trousers, and Ichikawa Monnosuke III as Hako’omaru, the childhood name of Soga no Goro, wearing the long ‘furisode’ sleeves of a young boy, in an unidentified play. All are seen beneath flowering plum blossom trees.
