Catalog note / 解説

Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859 and quickly established itself as Japan’s major international port. Prints such as this, called ‘Yokohama pictures’ ( Yokohama-e) catered for the Japanese fascination with the appearance and habits of the newly arrived foreigners. Red cartouches alongside both men in this picture identify them as en English man (right) and a Chinese man (left). Materials: Woodblock print on paper
