Sunday, 2 October 2005 Shin Hanga: First Set of Modern Beauties: #12 Fireflies Artist: Ito Shinsui Format: Large Oban tate-e: 17" x 11.5" approx Subject: A bijin of the Showa era with a 'flapper' style hairdo copied from the Jazz Age west, she has a peony tucked behind her ear. She is wearing traditional Japanese kimono and obi and is watching a firefly in the evening air above her. She holds a fan and a firefly cage lit by three of the insects.
